Operation Sudan
Operation Sudan began in a "Facing History" class when Elysa Montfort
experienced a rude awakening about genocides that have occured since the
Holocaust. After learning about the dire situation in Sudan, she wanted to reach
out to others of her generation and raise awareness. With the help and expertise
of Laura Thompson, the two teenagers created Operation Sudan in February of
2006. As the organization progressed, Beth Zhou and Kim Cura were brought on to
the OS team; the four friends now run and manage Operation Sudan, still striving
for the site's original goal: awareness.

MISSION STATEMENT
Apathy is Lethal
There are two types of people in the world: leaders and followers. Leaders stand
up for what is right, even if they are standing alone. Leaders are not deterred
nor discouraged by a seemingly hopeless situation, because leaders
understand the incredible power of one. Leaders tread their own path, and
take action when action is due.
Followers don't.
And here at Operation Sudan, we support the leaders of the world. Here at
Operation Sudan, we believe in them-- in you.
We are here to uphold the integrity of perseverence. We are here to aid those
who would choose to fight a worthy and necessary cause. We are here to speak for
those who cannot speak for themselves, and we're here to light a beacon of
inspiration with the hope that the torch will be passed until one day it is no
longer needed.
The only way to accurately describe the situation in Sudan is disgusting.
Thousands upon thousands of innocent men, women, and children are dying. These
unfortunate souls are dealing not only with famine, disease, and poverty, but
also with mass genocide. Young children are being forced into the scorching heat
and uninhabitable conditions of the Darfur region by means of brutal violence.
In a 24 hour time frame, it's common for these refugees to witness a
nine-year-old having his or her head bashed in with the back side of a rifle;
that is, of course, if the child hasn't died of starvation by then.
The pictures that have emerged from the cameras of some brave volunteers are
enough to make any natural person weep. Men- fathers, brothers, uncles- can be
seen lying dead in a heap of decaying bodies. Women- mothers, sisters, wives-
are found savaged and starved, not far from the fate that found their husbands
and brothers.
Don't look away.
With visuals like these, it's easy to turn your head. But in doing so, you're
also turning your back. Be appalled, for the situation calls for it.
Be saddened, for the situation calls for that as well. But do not be
discouraged, for it is only when we fail to try that we fail at all. And the
situation does not call for that.
Don't let the millions who have died in the name of freedom and betterment lie
in their graves in vain. Don't let the proclamations of "never again" that
followed the Holocaust go quietly into the night. Don't let this happen.
We can't allow it.
Get informed, be involved. Donate thirty cents, or one dollar, and feel
contented with the knowledge that every little bit helps and that every single
individual makes a difference. Even if you're not able to contribute monetarily,
educate yourself. Take advantage of the resources available to you and read our
essays. Print flyers from our
volunteer link and
post them around your school or workplace. Stand up and be heard.
You have the means to make a difference. Do not degrade yourself by degrading
the influence of one. If you have a heart, you have the power.
There are two types of people in the world.
Which are you?
